“Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’ “ 1 Samuel 7:12
What a great example Samuel has left us. After the Philistines had attacked the Israelites and God had defeated them, Samuel set up a stone to commemorate how God had helped them up to that point. He called it Ebenezer, which means “stone of help”. The song, “Come Thou Fount” refers to this when it says, “Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by thy help I’ve come.” It’s a recognition that only through God have we come to the place we are now.
Have you ever looked back on past trials in your life and seen the hand of God in it? Maybe you experienced rejection, the loss of a loved one, a physical ailment, or financial struggles. Now that you have been brought through it, are you able to see the good God brought through it as a result? Can you remember His comfort, healing, or provision? Have you thanked Him?
Take some time to look back on your life thus far and recall how God has helped you. Then, spend time thanking Him for the ways He revealed Himself, carried you through, or used it for good in one way or another.
