“Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.” 2 Corinthians 1:9
In this passage of Scripture, Paul very honestly tells the Corinthians of the suffering he endured in Asia. In verse 8 he describes it in this way: “…we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life.” His suffering was so intense that he believed he was close to death, as verse 9 says above. Yet, he is able to look back and see the benefit of such great afflictions: he was no longer dependent upon himself but on God.
When one is healthy, has a full bank account, has a car that is running perfectly, and kids who are behaving wonderfully, we don’t necessarily see the need to rely upon God. When life is good we begin to think we have things under control and forget that it’s only by the grace of God we have beating hearts.
Perhaps God has sent your current trial for the same reason He allowed Paul to go through his particular hardships in Asia. Cling to the One who has the power to raise the dead to life! Acknowledge His sustaining power in your own life, today.
